11 Cozy Bedroom Ideas for Fall

This blogpost about cozy bedroom ideas was updated in October 2022.

Cozy fall bedrooms
When the temperature drops, our nesting instincts kick into overdrive — and the bedroom becomes ground zero for hibernation mode. Now’s the time to layer on the cozy bedroom ideas and comforts for snuggle-up warmth you can enjoy all winter long.

To give you inspiration, we’re sharing all our favorite fall bedroom looks and walking you through our best tips for creating a cozy bedroom.

There’s nothing quite like an all-white bed in summer. Plus, it makes for a great neutral base for fall layering — just add in a few bold tones to warm up your look.

1. Nostalgic or Heirloom Pieces

Old, sentimental pieces are a natural way bring in that warm, cozy feel to your space in the cooler months. We love the way patchwork quilts instantly evoke a nostalgic feeling of bygone days and a slower pace. So if you have one of your grandmother’s quilts or a hand-made gem from a flea market, throw it on!

2. Pile on Patterns

Patterned bedding collections can achieve the same feel — our Aimee Block Print Bedding in warm neutrals is the perfect blend of pattern. It has a hand painted block print pattern on the front and a smaller ditsy on the back. The result? Patterns that play peekaboo depending on how you make your bed. Those little glimpses of color and pattern add layers and interest for a cozier bedroom.

3. Cozy Bedroom Ideas — Warm Colors

Colors are one of your best tools for creating a mood. Warmer tones, like reds, golds and oranges are sure fire ways to generate a bit of heat, and it’s easy to add them in seasonally if you have white or cream bedding as a base. Solid pillows in vibrant colors are an easy way to introduce a color palette into the mix.

4. Upholstered Pieces

Upholstered furniture — a side chair or a bench at the foot of the bed — brings an extra level of softness and comfort to a fall bedroom. For prime nesting, create a spot to curl up with a book and blanket.

Pattern-rich textiles and a casual, collected look pump up this space with cozy warmth. With the versatility of a duvet, there’s no need to run out and buy all-new bedding when the temperature drops. Just keep it neutral, as we did here with our Belissima Flax Linen Bedding, and switch out your insert for a heavier weight down fill and layer in a little color with a blanket.

5. Humble Furniture Pieces

One of our favorite cozy bedroom ideas is to bring in casual or vintage-style pieces create a more easygoing feel that’s especially in tune this time of year. Here, the woven trunk is the perfect stand-in as a bedside table, and a quilt hung behind the bed becomes a beautiful focal point.

6. Jewel Tones

You’ll warm things right up when you trade out those pastels from spring and summer for more deeply saturated, jewel tones. Sapphire, emerald, amethyst, and even deep golds bring a richness to your bedroom, and there are tones of ways to incorporate these luxurious hues.

7. Layer Textures

No matter what room you’re decorating, layers will add a cozy feel. In a bedroom, there are so many ways to mix textures together. Consider the texture of the furniture pieces, or mix textures in your bedding.

A prim and proper bed in a room full of sleek and shiny surfaces would feel really cold and austere. Using a variety of textures creates the kind of cozy bedroom environment that will make you want to kick off your shoes. For example, the whitewashed walls with woven furniture and natural rugs add a level of depth and dimension.

Or mix bedding pieces — a crisp percale sheet with a striped cotton duvet cover and a slubby linen quilt. Layer the three together to up a comfy factor.

8. Cozier with Velvet

There’s no denying how versatile a fabric velvet is, especially during the cooler months, when you want to luxuriate in comfort and warmth. It can go anywhere, and you can do a little or a lot. Can’t commit to a full velvet headboard? Add a pair of plush throw pillows instead or upholster a side chair for a soft place to sit.

Our top velvet picks? Our Lucca Velvet Bedding, Signature Velvet Drapery, and Signature Velvet & Linen Pillows.

9. Faux Fur

Go ahead, indulge yourself. Never has one blanket added such an instant wow factor. Faux fur has a natural warmth that will feel down-right luxurious on a cold day — and is sure to kick up your cozy, mountain vibe a notch.

10. Layered Rugs

Of course, a rug underfoot adds instant warmth. We love natural rugs, but they do feel a little flat in the winter. So layer a rug in a different pattern or shape on top for a more substantial look and feel.

11. Soft Lighting

Warm up your winter decor with a soft, inviting glow. Use a variety of lighting, such as bedside lamps or a pair of sconces, and put a dimmer on overhead lights. To avoid the harsh fluorescent lighting of an office, be sure to select bulbs that give off a warm, yellowish light to create a more inviting feel. For LEDs, look for the description “warm white” or “soft white.”

Lampshades have an important effect on the lighting in your room. Opaque shades (like the black ones above) only cast light up and down, whereas a white, linen shade will cast light all of your room. Choose your shade for the amount of light you need in your room.

I have paneling in my family room that I painted believeable buff from Sherwin Williams. My family room is small I only have a loveseat, chair, and Tv in it but it look crowded. I need some help. I saw the room on the website with the paneling that looked whitewashed, and I liked it.

This is Ballard Designs Lattice Knot Wool & Jute Rug. It’s super soft underfoot — perfect for Fall. Be sure to go ahead and order though before it’s discontinued as it’s already being clearanced!

I am having a hard time decorating my family room. I have a large sectional gray sofa facing my kitchen with a fireplace with a television hung over it. I need a rug and some pictures to bring the room together and other accessories. Do you think you could give me some suggestions.

For the last 5 months, I have changed the interior of my cabin to a light and colorful rooms. What style of furniture do you recommend. I like informal furniture but not rustic or modern . I like legs with curves or rounded styles. How do I mix furniture styles?
