How to Decorate Your Bedroom with Britany Simon: Part 1

Start with a Rug You Love

We spend a lot of time in the bedroom, but it’s often one of the last rooms we decorate. Whether it’s trying to find the right rug or deciding what to put on the wall or the great debate of fan vs. chandelier, decorating your bedroom can be a big task. So we invited HGTV Design Star Runner Up and “Fan Favorite,” Britany Simon, into our studio to help us pull together all the elements that make a bedroom beautiful, from floor to ceiling.

Get Grounded

Decorating an entire room can be an overwhelming thought, but not if you tackle the job piece by piece, says Britany. “I like to start with a rug.”

A rug is the foundation of any room’s dΓ©cor and adds color, texture and personality. So it only makes sense that it’s a great place to start when decorating a room. The right rug can help you create a cohesive dΓ©cor, the designer says.

Britany’s advice: Select a rug that reflects your style and matches the mood of your bedroom. From natural fiber rugs to Orientals to today’s bolder, graphic choices, there’s a look out there that’s just right for you.

For our bedroom, Britany chose a snappy chevron in indigo and white, an upbeat choice. “I’m not really a neutral color girl,” she confesses. “I like to mix it up. The blue and white in the rug will look great with pops of magenta and neutral gray walls.”

Consider Your Space

Before you go shopping, there are a few factors to consider first, says Britany. “You have to think about the amount of space you have in your room and the size of the rug.”

Take a few measurements in your bedroom. Do you have the space to create a seating area? If not, then you may choose to place a large rug underneath the bed – and give yourself a warm surface to walk on when your feet hit the floor in the morning. Another option is to place a runner down the side of your bed, suggests Britany. “You can work with the space you have.”

In the studio, Britany chose a 5′ x 8′ rug to anchor a small seating area at the foot of the bed. “It’s the perfect size for a seating area.”

Play with Pattern

A delightful mix of patterns in a room adds visual punch, but it’s easy to overdo it. Britany went all in with a graphic rug, but the white bedding gives the room space to breathe. “I like to pair a patterned rug with neutral bedding or a neutral rug with patterned bedding,” she advises. “It counters the weight of the pattern nicely.”

Balancing the scale of the patterns is another decorating must. Since Britany selected a big, bold pattern for the rug, she used smaller scale prints for the chairs and the pillows on the bed. None of the patterns compete with the other, and, instead, create a harmonious effect. “See? You really don’t have to be afraid of pattern!” says Britany.
