Furniture Arrangement in Large Great Room

Dear Style Studio,

I’m struggling with furniture placement and where to hang art/mirrors, etc. This is a large room, but want it to feel cozy. We don’t want the television on the fireplace and the need for lighting is really important as we don’t get much natural light. This space needs to serve the functions of the main entrance; fireplace and TV viewing; and walk through from back of house to kitchen.

There are a few items I have that I would like to incorporate – one is a spinet piano (57″l x 23″d x 35″h) and an entrance console table (52″l x 18″d x 30″h). Other than that we are pretty open.

I recently purchased the Peacock Tree Giclee art piece and would like to use it in the space. I would describe our style as transitional with rustic slant. Our home is moss rock on the outside and is in the pine trees so we want to keep with that style, but not overboard – not a lodge.

Working my way through the photos from left to right – the wall with the fireplace….

Your living room certainly has an incredible amount of space! With a room this large it is important to seperate it into sections. We have a few suggestions to help you accomplish that task and to create a cozy atmosphere within the room.  Let’sstart with your style inspiration … the Peacock Tree Giclee.

Christy B Floorplan

The natural main focus of the room is the fireplace so our suggestions are concentrated in this area. The first recommendation is to center the Thema Rug on the fireplace. We think this rug is perfect because of it’s color and weave.

Seating is critical so we recommend anchoring the the rug with a Baldwin Sectional slip covered in Sunbrella Taupe.  Add some pillows in Checked Gray, Haviland Gray, Danish Honey and Callisto Stripe Gray for a fun mix of pattern.

Next surround the sectional with occasional tables to hold drinks, reading material and table lamps for your ambient lighting needs. Behind the sectional on the front door side, add our Antoinette Sideboard in Distressed Yellow Ochre … flank it with Burlap Seat Storage Ottomans.

Behind the sectional on the kitchen side, place your existing console as the ideal spot for a table lamp. We recommend adding the Durham Nesting Tables at one end of the sectional along with our Woodland Coffee Table in the center of the rug.

Above the mantel, hang our Breathless Landscape Abstract and then flank it with our Garden District Mirrors.

For television viewing, place our Bergamo Media Cabinet and Hutch, in Distressed Gray, against the wall to the left of the fireplace. In front of this media piece, place two Larkin Swivel Chairs in Callisto Stripe Gray facing the sectional. The fantastic feature of these chairs is that they can be used for television viewing while facing the media cabinet or swiveled around to face the sectional for conversation.

Now, a home for your Peacock Tree Giclee … hang it on the wall between the stairs and the bay window and over the Ananda Serving Table. This spectacular corner will be perfect for cozy dining.

Place your piano between the wall mounted light fixtures … to the right of the front door. We also recommend replacing the current light sconces with our Cartagena Wall Sconces. They are fabulous for your sophisticated lodge styling and they will create a space in which to hang artwork!

Because your space is open and spacious, breaking it down into “areas” of activity will be the key to decorating success to make your living area feel like home.

Have Fun!

I love the choices you gave me. I ordered samples of the fabrics and rug and they look perfect with the fireplace and colors I already have going on.

Any paint color suggestions? Right now I’m looking at Manchester Tan – Benjamin Moore, but am open to another suggestion.
