Mixing and matching bedding is one of our favorite ways to add pattern and depth to a bedroom. With that in mind, we always make sure our bedding collections are designed to mix together for an effortless look. That means it’s now easier than ever to turn your winter den into the coziest, softest and most stylish spot around.
Follow our tips below to help you find just the right combination of color, pattern and texture to create a beautifully layered bed.
Start with Really Great Basics
According to our bedding stylist, Beth Marrs Dean, before you begin mixing and matching bedding, a beautiful bed begins with great basics: a statement headboard, luxuriously soft sheets and a classic bedskirt. Beth prefers to build from a neutral foundation rich in texture. In the bedrooms above, we selected a neutral Camden Headboard, basic bedskirts, and solid quilts and duvets, but if you’re not one to shy away from color or pattern, go for it.
Pick a Palette with Commonality
Mixing and matching bedding patterns brings personality to your space and creates a lived-in look. But it is your bedroom, so keep it harmonious with the unifying element of color. When you’re selecting bedding – Beth suggests starting with a print you love – make sure you use related colors that share the same intensity in hue. The combination of a vintage-inspired quilt and Jardin Toile Duvet is a bit unexpected, but it works so well because they share the same muted spa blue tone. For a completely foolproof strategy, stick to one color for a tone-on-tone look that’s just as chic, like we did in the bedroom above. The small block printed pattern and Jardin Toile, both in our Sandalwood colorway, blend effortlessly, while still bringing lots of personality to a crisp white bedroom.
Vary the Patterns
Another way to keep the mix pleasing to the eye is selecting a variety of patterns in different sizes, shapes and styles. You can’t lose with stripes, says Beth. Almost any print, from floral to leopard to paisley, plays well with the linear design of stripes. We blended our black Ticking Stripe with a large-scale toile, while our solid Audree Pom Pom collection in gray unites and grounds the two prints. We love the classic, yet modern look stripes create when they are coupled with an unexpected print.
Play with Texture
Unexpected pairings are made all the more beautiful by varying texture. It’s a definite way to create visual depth and reflect the mood of your room. A rumpled quilt takes on an air of informality when layered with a luxuriously soft percale duvet and velvet pillow. Pom pom trim lends a fun and frilly touch to crisp, clean stripes. Texture can also come from a fabric’s thickness or stitching. Beth’s top trick for styling a bed is layering duvets and quilts together to achieve a dreamy mix of textures. Depending on the level of warmth you want, cover your bed with one and fold the other at the foot of your bed.
In the bedroom above, we blended the same pattern in varying color ways to achieve a fun mix, but in a way that still feels cohesive and serene.
