How to Mix and Match Outdoor Furniture

How to Mix and Match Outdoor Furniture

We love picking our favorite designers' brains about decorating, and when it comes to outdoor spaces, the consensus is in. Suzanne Kasler, Bunny Williams and Miles Redd all prefer to mix and match furniture pieces on a porch or patio to create the same layered look they design for their indoor spaces. To put this strategy to the test, we blended elements from their signature outdoor collections in the same open-air space.

Pick Three Finishes

Pick Three Finishes

When picking pieces for this outdoor living area, we limited our finishes to white furniture with concrete accents, giving the entire space a cohesive look.

Concrete for Contrast

We used Bunny Williams La Colina Console with a black aluminum base and a concrete top to contrast with the glossy white finish of Suzanne and Miles' collections. The concrete top on Bunny's console coordinates with the top of Miles Redd's dining table and pieces from Suzanne's collection, helping to blend all three collections.

We also brought in Miles Redd's Chinese Vase Outdoor Lamp. The zinc lamp shade works beautifully with the concrete top of Bunny's table and makes this covered porch feel like a true living room.

Seating Switch

Seating Switch

Rather than a matching dining set, we chose a mix of chairs from Suzanne Kasler's Versailles collection to partner with Miles Redd's rectangular dining table. And in the same way you'd add in a different head chair in your formal dining room, we chose folding teak campaign chairs.

To finish off the space, we flanked an outdoor-safe mirror with wall sconces from Bunny Williams, creating a focal point on the far wall.

Inspired by the indigo in Bunny Williams melamine dinnerware collection, we sprinkled our outdoor space with navy blue accents and touches of vibrant palm green.

Play with Shapes

Play with Shapes

In addition to the variety of interesting finishes and extra warmth, one of our favorite reasons to mix and match collections is the interplay of interesting shapes. The scalloped edge and contrasting trim of Bunny Williams' Mughal Arch Umbrella adds a touch of drama to this poolside space.

Finishing Touches

Finishing Touches

Don't forget the final flourishes - they're just as important outdoors as in. To complement this outdoor kitchen island, we used a trio of barstools and a large arrangement of faux palm leaves. The leaves work back to our indigo and green color palette, while the woven barstool seats echo the weave of our dining chairs.
