How our Casa Florentina pieces are made

Individual style has always been the heartbeat of Ballard Designs. We love eclectic spaces with personality and uniqueness, and custom pieces are a guaranteed way to inject life into a home. One fantastic, one-of-a-kind piece can light up an entire room, and it's that idea that lead us to introduce our Casa Florentina collection in 2011.

Each piece in the collection is made-to-order in one of 15 finishes with heirloom quality construction from Italian craftsmen.

For centuries, Florentine furniture makers have been refining their craft, often using the same simple tools and techniques of the great master painters that inspired their work. That craftsmanship means no detail is overlooked.

  • Recessed finishing nails
  • Drawer glides coated in beeswax
  • Hardware inspired by time-work doorknobs
  • Drawers lined in marbleized paper

At our workshop outside Florence, our master craftsman Grazia developed an exclusive line of finishes, inspired by the colors of Tuscany, that are hand applied to each piece.

Using age-old techniques, Grazia, and the artisans who have trained under her, meticulously applied the finish in layers, distressing each one by hand.

Before each piece is shipped to you, Grazia and her team add the finish touches a beeswax to coat the drawer glides and drawer liners in marblelized paper.
