Easy to hang and sturdyI’ve read a few reviews prior to purchasing this shelf that stated it was difficult to hang and wouldn’t be secure if you couldn’t find a stud. Well I totally disagree. The way this shelf is designed, it allows you to place your screw in any one of the numerous openings it has for holding a screw, thus ensuring that you’ll be able to hit a stud. It’s extremely sturdy. I purchased a few to create a path for my cats to get up on a very tall bookcase where they sometimes like to sleep, and they jump from shelf to shelf and there’s no way this shelf is going to falter. It’s an excellent and sturdy design!

Floating shelvesBe aware that the “distressed look” of these shelves is made by the manufacturer spraying them with black stain. It almost looked like they were burned. We sanded the front and exposed side of them and re stained. It didn’t take long but we would have preferred not to. The shelves are nicely made and of good quality. We put 3 in our kitchen. I definitely would not put anything heavy on them. We were able to put at least 2 mounting screws in wood. We used drywall mounting hardware for the others bracket holes. They still seem to have a bit of movement because of the way the brackets are made-but they hang straight and look nice

Tilts with no studI bought 2 of these (36") with a very specific wall location in mind. I was instantly disappointed to find out that the limited screw hole placing on the brackets meant that I couldn't mount the shelves to any studs. So--of course--they sagged! I even shored up each bracket with 2 additional 50-lb wall anchors (6 total per bracket). Still, the brackets and shelves tilt noticeably forward under their own substantial weight. Now I have to go buy brackets to make them level (and therefore drill into a tile backsplash)--something I was trying to avoid by buying these floating shelves in the first place. These are beautiful shelves that I'd still recommend...so long as you're lucky enough to find a stud or two!

Good looking, poor designThe shelf looks great but even when installed in two studs, cannot get it to level. The mounting bracket is insufficient to support the weight of the hefty shelf. I’m going to have to use visible brackets underneath to support the weight.

Sagging shelvesThe shelves are beautiful but they slant forward. The other day some of my drinkware slipped off and shattered all over the floor. I wish there was a way to fix. We've tried shimming them but have had no luck.

Looks great but sags when hungI loved the look of the shelf and ordered the 48" length. After hanging it I noticed it sagged - not just a little that most wouldn't notice. It sagged enough that I had to take it down. I returned it to the store.

Shelf tilts forward without additional supportLike others, I wasn't able to get this shelf level so I hired an experienced handyman. He diagnosed a potential problem - the hollow center of the shelf means there's no interior structure to support the prongs that stick out of the bracket on which these shelves are hung. As a result, the 12" deep shelf tilts forward at more than a 90-degree angle over the approx 8 to 9" long interior prongs. In addition to leaving a gap between the shelf and the wall, the forward tilt of the shelf made me uncomfortable placing glass or other fragile display items on it. Exterior shelf brackets could be added below the shelf to provide support, but that's not the look I wanted nor is it what a floating shelf should need. This seems to be a design issue. If an interior support (for example, with holes drilled to match the prongs) were added to the shelf to allow it to hang level, I would happily purchase that improved design. As currently designed, these shelves tilt forward off of the wall so I'm sending them back to Ballard. Thanks to the customer service rep for helping me with the return process - Ballard has nice people on staff!

Poor bracketsThe wood shelf itself is beautiful. However, the mounting bracket does not hold the shelf level. This allows the shelf to sag even without any items on it. I tried to put some light pictures on, but these slid off. Overall quite disappointed, as I was really excited about this shelf initially.
