In my opinion, it is real wood pulp that has been made into a veneer that has been white washed. It has a very pretty look. It is hollow, but substantial in weight. I have a beautiful, tall, ceramic lamp on top of it. It looks great.!

I sat on it for a few days, but ultimately decided to return it because it was just too white for my liking. shipping was great and the return was super simple.
